Phu Cat

Detachment 1 of the 6994th Security Squadron moved from Nha Trang AB, RVN to Phu Cat AB RVN on 9 September 1969 under the command of Major Merle Vernone. Phu Cat AB was located in the Bihn Dihn Province, about mid-way between An Khe and the coastal town of Qhi Nhon. The detachment operated out of Phu Cat Air Base from 10 September 1969 until it was deactivated on 31 Oct 1971.

A crew from the detachment participated in a rescue of an Army reconnaissance patrol when they detected a faint distress call over an emergency frequency, located the precise position of the patrol, and acted as an airborne command and control center for 50 minutes with rescue aircraft until a forward air control aircraft could take command of the situation.

On 8 October 1969, SSgt Elmore L. Hall and Sgt Michael L. Stiglich were killed when their EC-47 #43-49100, call-sign Prong 33 lost radio contact and crashed  in Bihn Dihn Province, Vietnam while returning to base due to mechanical problems .  Four crewmen from the 361st Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron were also killed in the crash.
